I am old enough to remember when the President didn't call women "Nasty." When Liberty was a lady in flowing robes and not a man lying to citizens from behind a red cap. I recall when the city of New York didn't despise the President. There was also a time when a country's welcome for immigrants, etched by poets into a Statue, wasn't abandoned and replaced by jails for Mexican children justified by racist platitudes. When the 4th of July, regardless of party, wasn't a photo-op for divisiveness, rather a showcase of ideals even in the context of so many imperfections.

I made ONE PHOTO of the Statue of Liberty, in 2000. With artist's humility, I propose it is (ONE of) the best images of this iconic setting. The day was foggy. The twin towers are visible through the fog of Manhattan. My first stop on my first trip to NYC (c. 1977) was the observation deck at the Twin Towers; and there they are a year or so before they fell.

Surely, everyone reading these words or seeing these two single photos has her or his own story of this ensemble.

For this Liberty Fortnight, 2-16th July, Independence Day to Bastille Day, I hope you might consider a useful product or gift featuring either the Statue of Liberty or the Eiffel Tower. The concept here is to share a story. It's artwork, concept-oriented, signed. You can get similar from Bezos, maybe, and yet this I hope is a different, additive way to renew your own relationship with shared ideals at this challenging time.
