I produced a collection of 246 square photos starting in 2019. The titles of each photograph posted come from a mapping application called ///what.3.words.
This ///what.3.words app divides the entire Earth into a grid of 57 trillion (yes, trillion) individual, 3-by-3 metre (9.7 feet) squares. The ///what.3.words app helped me envision the world in images with titles corresponding to a particular 3-by-3 metre location. Each of the 246 square images thus carries a title of 3 poetic words from the place I made a digital photograph.

Each final, collectible print from ///what.3.words is designated 9 images chosen by a collector. Each of the 9 images measures 6x6 inches. Each print is 1 of 1, unique. Please see the sample on this page. Each final print measures 20x20 inches.

The ///what.3.words app serves many users: first responders, delivery drivers, outdoor enthusiasts, and some artists. If you must pinpoint a location that has no street address, this app may be a good friend.

Choosing subjects for ///what.3.words resembled my usual process. Each photo posted here represents things and places on my own family’s journey from pre-pandemic isolation in Paris to our 2020 retreat homeward to Ireland by car.

In February of 2022, I got a tough diagnosis. I lost my memory, and was forced to have emergency surgery to remove 90% of a rare brain tumour. Please see the last image in this ///what.3.words, a self-portrait from 2022. I wear a radiotherapy mask (///cheek.silly.flesh) at the start of post-surgery zapping.

I love ///what.3.words app. What is photography if not a creation from light of a specific place at a specific time? I also found that the more photographs I made using the 3 words on the app, the more I heard echoes of past artists like Surrealist poets practising automatic writing in early 20th Century Europe.

In 2020, my Dad fell ill in Wisconsin, USA. At first chance, my family began our journey back to Ireland by car. The last time I spoke with my Dad was Father’s Day of 2020. One 3x3 metre square at a time, we navigated to Cherbourg for the ferry to Ireland; ///what.3.words frames this time of pandemic isolation and invites connections.
