This image came to mind upon seeing a recent New York Times clip about a 15 year-old American dancer training in Russia (link below). I made this photograph embedded in Kolomna (a region of St. Petersburg). This ballerina is a student. The ballet is "Sleeping Beauty", performed for an audience of school children. This ballerina and other subjects embody in the individual what I witnessed more generally in situ, in Kolomna. To me these are portraits of transition, people and places unfinished or in flux. This and other images emerged from countless conversations and rehearsals. I became familiar with the people and their process, they with mine, and we became part of the same performance.
